Sakhalin Zoobotanical Park is a unique destination where you can encounter animal species collected from every corner of the globe. It is the only living nature reserve in Russia's only island region, thriving despite extreme snowfall and challenging climatic conditions. A beloved destination for both Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk residents and visiting travelers. As of January 1, 2025, the park is home to representatives of 274 animal species (over 1,300 individual animals). Of these, 10 species are listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation, and 10 more are protected under the Sakhalin Oblast Red List.
Victory Square is one of the city's main public spaces, nestled at the foot of Bolshevik Mountain. From here, Victory Prospekt stretches west to east, cutting through the heart of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
The square received its current name on May 6, 1975 — on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the liberation of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands from Japanese occupation. At that time, a memorial complex was unveiled here. Beneath its pedestal lies a cartridge case filled with earth stained by the blood of Soviet soldiers. Mounted atop the concrete base is a T-34-85 tank, flanked by a 76mm anti-tank gun and a 122mm howitzer.
The Victory Museum & Memorial Complex features unique three-dimensional panoramas dedicated to the military history of Sakhalin and the Kurils, plus combat vehicle simulators and a shooting range where you can experience life as a pilot, sniper, or tank commander. This immersive historical environment allows visitors to personally relive pivotal moments of victorious battles and connect with the emotions experienced by the heroes of those hard-fought conflicts.
Consecrated in 2015, this new cathedral replaced the older church, which had become too small to accommodate all worshippers. Designed in the Novgorod architectural style, the cathedral features five domes set upon a quadrangular base, with façades crowned by symmetrical arches. The building is constructed from Indian red marble, granite, and classic white marble. Its exterior walls are adorned with mosaics crafted in Jerusalem.
The Sakhalin Regional Museum of Local Lore is one of the foremost scientific and cultural institutions in Sakhalin Oblast and the Russian Far East. The museum occupies a building constructed in 1937 for the Karafuto Governorate Museum, designed in the forms of Japanese medieval architecture known as the "Imperial Crown Style." Today, the museum safeguards over 200,000 items of cultural heritage from the Russian Federation, including: • Archaeological and ethnographic artifacts • Natural history specimens from Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands • Collections of fine and applied arts • Historical documents, rare books, photographs, and other monuments of the island region's history and culture
The Sakhalin Regional Art Museum is the only institution of its kind dedicated to fine arts on the island. Relatively young — founded in the 1980s — it offers a compelling journey through diverse artistic traditions. The ground floor hosts rotating temporary exhibitions, while the second floor features permanent collections: • Russian Art of the 19th – Early 20th Century • Japanese Decorative & Applied Arts • Contemporary Korean Art
Glory Square is a memorial complex erected in honor of the liberation of Sakhalin from Japanese occupation in 1945. Constructed in the 1980s, the ensemble includes: • A monument to Marshal A.M. Vasilevsky • Two sculptural groups depicting a soldier and sailors • The "Eternal Glory to the Heroes" stele • An Eternal Flame • Glory Alley featuring 14 busts of honored heroes • A memorial dedicated to soldiers who fell in the Afghan and Chechen conflicts • Displayed historical military vehicles
Lenin Square is the city's central public space, defined by its iconic landscape: a monument to Lenin, administrative buildings, the railway station, a fountain, and classic cobblestone paving. During holidays, it transforms into the main venue for public celebrations and community events. On weekends, locals stroll here, while international tourists often visit as part of guided city tours. In summer, the square becomes a particularly pleasant and picturesque gathering spot.
